Edge #1.The Loner His given name was Josiah Hedges, an innocent-enough moniker. But one look at the cruel set of his mouth and the icy penetration of his blue eyes and anyone would recognize pure danger in man’s clothing. Now let’s find out how this man lost his name and became known as Edge.

You'd probably have to be a neanderthal to enjoy The Loner (Edge #1). Well if a neanderthal could read I mean. (What's that say about Hersom? I'm well into Edge #2 by the time I wrote this.)
Having read almost exclusively sci-fi/fantasy for the last year/years, I've been suffering from major book burn-out. Out of desperation, I went back to one the first genre's I used to read, Westerns. And not the realistic historic fiction type of Western, but the testosterone fueled, ultra violent, sexist, spaghetti western paperback kind, that used to take about half the shelf space of the Men's Adventure section of the mall book store and several levels of the drug store spinner racks. The likes of which Clint Eastwood and director Sergio Leone revolutionized the western movies with. First published in 1972, its cheesy book from a cheesy decade. No politically correctness or high literary merit to be found here. Ain't it grand?
Edge is a mean son-of-b**** that's really no better than the savage men he hunts down. Between the war, and the brutal murder of his brother - the last of Edge's family- all compassion has been burned out of him or it just unleashed his psychopathic tenancies. I'd never want to pass Edge in the street but he's a helluva good time to read about.

Edge The Loner Edge series Book 1 edition by George G Gilman Malcolm Davey Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Live the loner. First read it 40 years ago. Still enjoy reading it even today. Edge sure is a sarcastic dude isn’t he?
I purchased this due to the Original series that based itself upon this story. It isn't one that I'm either opposed to or supportive of recommending. The Western genre is very hit or miss, and it's better approached on an individual basis. I was swayed by the live action series. If you liked that, perhaps you'll like the book too.
I liked the EDGE tv movie as it reminded me of the old western and wish it would have made the pilot cut to an series. I actually liked this book better and would recommend it for fans of Clint Eastwood type antihero westerns.
Gritty harsh realistic western. When I saw the actually copyright date I thought this would be lame. If the wild bunch and high plains drifter had a baby This would be the result. Why did I like it? The west has been glorified a lot. Good or bad you knew what was what. The line is so blurred here you just want the lead to kill and survive. Edge is not what you call a good man but you know from the first chapter why. If you are looking for a good western series you have found it.
As a teenager I didn't read books - until I found Robert E Howard (Conan) and George G Gilman. Read all these books when the paperback price was the same as the ebook price.
Although I own all the paperbacks in the Edge series (61 of them), I will also get the ebook versions - just in case.
As an indication of the quality of this series, the paperbook set often appears on ebay for about $3000.00.
1st read it over 30 yrs ago. The whole series. was the way I pictured the wild west to be. Loved it then. Seen the books on the website for Gilman and saw they still have printed copies of the books for full price. Was impressed that came out with Digital Kendell copies, for 1/2 half the price. Not the best written stories but very entertaining if you like to read about violence in the old west. Would make a good movie along the same line as "Hell On Wheels". Matter of fact, Anson Mount would make a good "EDGE"
Edge books are easy to read and delightfully politically incorrect, a refreshing change in this 'New Age' era of stifling 'sensitivity'. Escapism is what it is all about! If you want to read a story where the hero always wins and when in doubt, kills his enemy and a few others too, just to be sure, then this is for you. If you want deep life lessons and a multi-layered plot, then maybe this is NOT for you! I believe that there are a lot of people out there who put a lot of mental effort into their working day, and don't want a deep, challenging book to read in the evening. Edge is for you! My tip Try to read the series in sequence, starting with The Loner. It is not essential, but it's best if you can. My only criticism is not of the book or the author, but of the version. It is obvious that the version was scanned in from a hard copy. Typical scanner errors abound (like 'comer' where it should be 'corner'). You can still read the book, sure, but I just figure that if you are going to be selling thousands of 'copies' in form at 5 - 10 bucks apiece, with none of the traditional costs like printing and postage, surely you could just proof read the thing first? Shame on for that.
